It is a HP Pavilion 8860 . and if that the max I can go is there something I can change to add more

Yeah, you can get a new motherboard but you'll likely have to get a new processor as well. If the limit of the motherboard is 512MB and if you put more than that in there, it will either not see it or the PC will not boot with more than the maximum amount installed. I'd say it's time for a new computer but then that's just me.

The newer computers run dual memory sticks. 2 x 256 = 512 megs of Ram...

You can upgrade with dual 512 sticks to get 1024 Megs of Ram...

You have to change both WITH the same value.

If Im not mistaken, the 512 is per slot of the expansion card. Meaning you should be able to have 512 in each slot.
