Please be detail. I'd like to try changing the oil on my own.

Take it to an auto-parts store, they recycle it.
I take mine to Autozone, they will accept up to 5 gallons at a time.
When you go to buy your next new oil, take the old oil from the last change with you.

I have a container that I purchased from the Auto Parts store that I place under the drain plug -- I capture the used oil in this container, put on the cap, and then put it in my car. On the way to do my chores and work, I drive past the used oil recycling drop off, empty the container there, and just reuse the container on the next oil change.
