The strings also get grimy, you can see that best on the unwound strings -- they start getting black, this deadens the sound. I change my main guitar's strings about once a month or more if I'm playing it a lot. They have strings now (elixer and others) that have a special coating that is supposed to increase string life and increase playability. I have tried these and don't like the sound or feel. So I slap on new strings often.

Having 15 guitars i find that i don't change my strings that often. Usually if you play your instrument a lot I would say to change them every few weeks. As for breaking strings i haven't broken any since i first started playing. This was mainly due to incorrect tuning(making the strings too sharp). If you want that crisp clean sound all the time and don't mind changing your strings I would buy a lot of cheap strings and just change them often.

you don't really know when they will break, but as a rule, when they start sounding flat....change em...
