Because they can afford to eat?

Well, I know that many people's opinion of what "fat" is differs. For example, in many Asian countries, a person more than ten pounds overweight is fat, but in America, that may be considered normal or just overweight, not "fat." Also, there is an American mentality prevalent which is "I want what I want now and fast, and conveniently." So, Americans tend to eat easily fixed, pre-packaged and unhealthy foods, fast foods, and/or restaurant meals which are huge in portion. Also, with the style of life and level of convenience most Americans have, many Americans don't exercise. In many other countries, people ride bikes or walk to work and the store much more than here.

We eat too much and don't exercise enough. We have the best and safest food in the world - that's the good news and the bad news at the same time. It's tastier and more nutritious than ever in the history of the world and it's served to us in portions that are far too big. We should be eating more fresh fruits and veges and absolutely stop drinking sodas and nutrient beverages, excepting milk and drink much more water instead.

On the other hand this "continuous improvement binge" that the we've been on makes everything easier: food to prepare, changing channels on the TV, less physical labor all over the place because of advancing technology. The net result is that we don't have to work as much as we used to.

Lastly our health care is el primo. So we are eating more and better, working less and less and we are extremely healthy......until all those extra pounds catch up with us and we get diabetes and heart disease and can't get up out of a chair......

Because there are too many fast food restaurants and "convenience" foods and people are too lazy too cook healthy food. Another reason is people don't have to do hard, physical labor like they used to. Like chopping wood, or tilling land and all that other stuff they had to do back in the day. Although, I am thankful for modern conveniences so that I can turn on my light with the flick of a switch, and microwave some popcorn. But that doesn't mean I can sit around and be lazy and wait for my welfare check. There are some people, though, that have like thyroid problems and can't help it...

Too many people just concider "fat" people as people who eat too much and don't excerise enough. I know there are millions upon millions of people who are over weight becasue of heath conditions that can not be controlled or becasue they are in wheel chairs and can not get out and excersise. THe problem of obesity will only go a way when ALL people have the oportunity a productive healthy lives. Until problems with society can be solved you will never solve the problem of people being overwieght.

Because we have become an overindulgent, lazy, instant gratification kind of media-whore nation and those who are not fat... Are self indulgent and selfish in other ways. Too much money, too much free time, too much of everything really, it is just more socially acceptable to be "Obese" in a more acceptable kind of way. Like a lack of moderation in the way of drinking or partying too much and too often, girls gone wild, sex, porn, or drugs or sports cars with wet bars and fish tanks that go 200 miles per hour! There are lots of ways to be fat you know... That's the american way, as long as you still look good doing it, you can be as wastefull and idioticly self indulgent and over do it as much as you like!

But you knew that when you asked this didn't you?

Confirmation! You're right, pin a rose on your chest!

Many things influence obesity, heredity, diets, good tasting food just to mention a few..Just because people are overweight does not mean they are dumb or lazy, thats a myth or something only ignorant people choose to think,Physical structure is not what makes a person a good person,in general, and judgemental people are not considered good people in my opinion..to each their own..=)

Our culture has become one of exess, gluttony, and too much luxury... we eat too much- often too much of the wrong things, feed our kids too much (same here), watch too much TV...

Typically, weight is a sypmtom if a bigger problem (no pun intended here)- hormone issues (thyroid, diabetes?), emotional issues (depression?), lifestyle (activity level and diet), etc. If all these other issues are approached in a healthy way early in life, I don't think there would be 1/2 the weight issues in the US.
