I love my job very much, and I feel I am very good at it. The only problem is that sometimes I feel like I don't interact enough with my coworkers. Due mostly to the fact that I am very introverted and unsure of myself. I get along well with my coworkers and have never had any problems with them. Since I am going back to work after a rather long vacation, I am ready to start over and change the way I go about interacting. Does anyone have any serious advice on how to become more social at work? Serious answers only please.

I too am rather introverted, so I know just what you're talking about. Try engaging one or two of your co-workers, and focus on them, not yourself. Talk with them and find out about their lives, kids, where they went to college, where they used to work, where they've lived before, etc.

Be careful about discussing religion or politics. [When I first started dating the gal who is now my wife, we learned that we had very different views on religion and politics. So we agreed, on the 2nd date, that those two topics should be off-limits. That was a VG decision. We've been married for many years.]

One thing though. You should not feign interest in others. Try to develop genuine concern and regard for them as individuals. Take it slow, work on one or two people at a time, and see how it progresses.

I'm guessing there may be one or two coworkers you'd like to get to know better. Maybe start by spending lunch with one of them and see how things go. Perhaps as you get to know them better you'll be less introverted and more open to getting to know more people. However, being introverted (having a reserved personality) is not a bad thing it's part of who you are.

Try observing how your co-workers interact with each other. Watch what they talk about, how they talk, body language, hand movements, etc. Also, try to project the confidence you have in your job on yourself. Confidence is one thing you can never go wrong with. Don't focus on what you're unsure of with yourself, but rather what you DO like and what you feel would "mesh" best with your surroundings. Good Luck!
