You pay too much for the name Sony. Apart from that: their helpdesk blows chunks, so if you get any troubles with it, don't count on their support to be there for you.
Check out specs of the Sony and other brands. There's a good chance you'll find a laptop that's just as good (or even better) from Asus, Dell, or some other brand.

I would not recommend getting a Sony VAIO unless it comes with the top of the line parts. My dad has one but it dosent have the best components and sometimes it is slow. However it can be a very good computer

They are good notebook but overpriced, you can get just as good a notebook from Dell (like the Inspiron E1505 which comes with a Duo processor) for about $300 less:

You should also be able to get a comparable HP or Gateway for about $200 to $300 cheaper and they also come with Duo processor which is better.

I am software engineer, i have heard from people saying that sony has just come with laptops and sesktops in the market, they re not efficent and also more expensive then other brands like dell, ibm, acer, Hp , i would recommend Dell, since there re wide choices at best prices and free shipping

I got mine from my nephew after he used it for gaming. He dropped it a few times and broke the PCMCI slot, but it is still kicking. Pretty tough little machine. I think it will still work for me a couple more years till I am ready to upgrade to a new one.
