I'd check the Apple website online. Your iPod might still be covered by a warranty or it's possible that if a lot of other people have had this problem, they might be doing some kind of a service recall. I have an old 3g iPod and the screen died, I checked with Apple and it ended up that they sent me a postage prepaid box that I packed the iPod up in and within 2 days they'd sent me a new one! They have great service.
