If they wont wash, try some shoe deodorant or better still, try and buy another similar pair of slippers to wear - they might take some breaking in, but think how comfortable they will become and, as they will be new, they will not smell. When I find a really comfy pair of shoes or slippers I go back to the shop and get another pair exactly the same to keep for when the first ones wear out.
As much as you love your old slippers do you love them as much as your husband, because it sounds as if that will become your choice if you don't do something about it soon.

Keep your eyes peeled for something that he loves to wear. A favorite shirt that is frayed and full of holes, a pair of old worn out jeans...something like that.
Next time he brings up the slippers, go get his favorite thing and let him know that you will throw yours out if he will throw his out. Hopefully, it will make him understand that everyone has some kind of clothing object that is comforting to them.
If you do decide to get rid of the slippers one day, just try to find a pair that is very similar. That's what I have to do for my grandmother. She has Alzheimer's and it really confuses her when we get rid of clothing that is stained or worn. I have found that if I buy her one that is very similar before I toss the bad one, she never realizes it's gone.
You can find a match to almost anything. It's not always easy, but if you keep looking I bet you can find a new pair of slippers just like your old ones.
Just find a new pair and then go find your husband. Give him the old ones and tell him that he can finally throw them out. Then go get the new ones out of your closet and put them on! Boy, won't he be thrilled with the fact that you still have the slippers that he hates? He won't be able to say a thing about it because they will be new! Best Wishes.

After 4 years they may be showing a bit of wear.. Get some new ones.. If by chance your husband is on a power trip, keep them around to show you are not bowing to his demands. But do get a new pair.
