if i remember my networking you cannot transfer files between two machines with just a usb or cat-5 cable...something about the pin configuration in the cables. They have crossover cables but they arent cheap, i just bought a usb flash drive - 12 bucks for a 256 mb which is aprox. 40 songs

Yes but you will need a special usb cable to do this and they run anywhere from 50 to 75 bucks. Dont waste your money, they are nothing but trouble. If all you want to do is transfer music do yourself a favor and go buy a flash drive. They are cheaper everyday, I have seen them for as little as 1 gig for 30 bucks. There is NO SUCH thing as a usb crossover cable either folks! A crossover cable only allows you to hook two systems together providing they both have networking ports and they are very hard to set up if you dont know what you are doing. If neither laptop is network ready you will then have to buy two network interface cards or nics. By the time you are done you will have spent another 70 bucks for cards and a cable. Bottom line? FLASH DRIVE! Plug it in, copy files , put in other pute, paste files.

Yeah you can do. Also you can try with cross over cable. Assign IP to both laptop and use cross over cable to access data

Yes, but you need a "crossover" cable sometimes called Laplink or Buslink cable.

of course..it's totally safe but firstly you have to make sure dat another one laptop or file dat you want too transfer is safe from any virus, trojan etc...scan it's first by using nod32 anti virus..it's voted by internet users as a best anti virus in this world.you can download it from www.download.com n search by name nod32 anti virus..one more..dis method is much more faster den burning cd etc.
