I saw the redux version. I get the basics of what the film is about but what is the deeper meaning?

The way evil resident in the heart of every man can, under the right stress and pressure, be manifested by even good men in the most horrible, obscene and perverse ways...and can still be seen by these formerly good men as necessary, moral, and ultimately good.

The film is a graphic depiction of the futility and stupidity of war. In this case the Vietnam War but still war in general. It shows the absurdity of the mind set of senior officers and indeed the other ranks. Whilst being visually stunning and very well filmed it is graphic and in a number of instances disturbing. The non redux version is by far the best.

Francis Ford Coppola's take on the Vietnam War, following a novel written by Joseph Conrad called "Heart of Darkness". Conrad wrote this in 1902, drawing on his time in the (Belgian) Congo in Africa.

I read a little of it in high school (years ago), but if you wanna get what Coppola was going for, I'd check it out. To me, it was about the evils of colonialism in Africa, which maybe fit what was going on in Vietnam.

It is about an officer in vietnam who has to sail down a river to kill a rouge officer, while encountering resistance along the way. It's a really good movie.
