I love historical novels. I very rarely buy books set in time periods I've actually lived in.

I guess history was always one of my favorite subjects in school and when I read a historical, I always feel like I'm learning something. After I finish one, I usually have to go find a non-fiction book about the same time period and historical figures so I can find out what's true and what the author made up.

I've learned about subjects I've never even heard of before in the hands of great historical novelists like Anya Seton, Diana Gabaldon and Edward Rutherford.

I enjoy literary fiction by new or little known authors. Of course, I am an avid consumer of novels fresh off the paperback rack in the supermarket; but, when I find an original voice among the discarded or long forgotten tomes in a dusty, used bookstore, I feel as though I found buried treasure.

I go through different phases. But stick within drama, comedy and romance. I'm a sucker for a happy ending.

Books that take me inside another and subsequently broaden my consciousness; that induce me to think big instead of small; books that both celebrate and confirm our humanity. Making us grow is literature's most important job. If your soul is tingling when you finish a book and you can only think "Wow...", you've just read a masterpiece.
