I just saw something outside that looked like a cross between a hummingbird and a moth. It flew and drank from the flowers like a hummingbird, but it was colored like a moth and had antennae. Ack! And it wasn't shy at all, lemme tell ya. Anyone know what this is?

I have seen them before. They are the biggest moth I have seen and they act like a hummingbird. Guess why they call it Hummingbird moth.

Most likely a sphinx moth, the adult form of the "hornworm" caterpillar. Check the Web sites in the Source field for pictures.

They're beautiful but kinda creepy because they're SO big, they really do look like humminbgirds when they fly. And the caterpillars are huge and have dangerous-looking spines sticking out of their rear (it's how they scare off predators). The caterpillars can damage plants, but they're harmless to humans in caterpillar or adult form.

There are moths that look very much like hummingbirds. alizza is correct. They fly just like a hummer, look almost identical, and feed just like a hummingbird.

Don't be afraid of it. I don't think there are any known attacks by them.

all female birds are less coloful than the male counterparts due to show/dance/colors to atract a female to mate. My guess is that you saw a female feeding on your flowers
