They don't.. they have a room of writers/prewritten cards for them that tell them what to ask. Some people even do interview ahead of time so they can make it look like their buds with whoever they're talking to.

All talk shows are created by producers doing research, and most shows have several producers. The hosts are presenters, they talk but the producers are vital to the show and for show of network quality they may have a dozen producers and as many writers...It is a smooth presentation of ideas....Rush Limbaugh does not spontaneously say clever things...Call-in programs are more difficult as there is not so much time to think out answers or hedge....but with computers we can flash the host to avoid something or even cut off the caller. Remember it is a show. Oprah is planned weeks in advance, Jerry Springer also planned in advance was stage managed.....nothing is left to chance.

That is a big part of what they're getting paid for, but a good staff who pays attention to what all the people are calling about makes a huge difference. I think most hosts are naturally inquisitive about current events and already have a lot of the topics roiling around in their mind, ready to offer a great speech to the right caller.

Listening to controversial talk show hosts (that rile up people) is a guilty pleasure of mine. I'll listen to Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Blow Me Up Tom and even David Duke because they are outspoken and know how to stir up the pot.
