A friend fell on the wood newel post at the base of my stairs, and now it is quite wobbly. Could someone please tell me how to fix this?

if you have a basement or crawl space under the stair area and the post end is down there use consruction glue ,wedges and screws
if you cant see the bottom of the post try 6" long finish screws angle down towards the floor 2 per side

You have not described the situation enough for me to give you the best way to fix this. If the post ties into the stair stringer, you might be able to beef up the joint, without having to come up through the floor. In this layout, the base of the newel post is often cut in half and hangs down over the edge of the stairs. You could drill some holes, countersink some screws, and plug your work. The best way is to remove the post, and remount it properly, using dowels and carpenter's glue. Remember, if you don't fix it right, the next time it fails, somebody could get hurt.

Go to the Hardware store and buy some "L" brackets, Some even come with the screws included, mount them at the bottom of the post and the stair tread. Paint them the same color of your newell, and tell your friends to be careful...

Remove the bottom tread. Install screws through the newel into the stringer, and reinstall the tread. If you don't know what I'm talking about, you need to call a Carpenter.

The shank of a well made sword (or knife) should run all the way though the handle. Wobble should be impossible.
