First the Shift Gage; this just a linkage adjustment. I am not sure if yours a Manual or Electronic Readout, but, should be able to check the linkage where it connects to the Transmission. It may need adjusted or a part may be worn. This nothing serious as long as you shift into gear, it just not look correct.
The Rev/Winding up sounds like you may be low on fluid. From the year model it may have a small leak, usually the Front Seal as it the hardest to fix. Have to pull the Transmission to replace a $5 part. But, if it not a bad leak just check the fluid level and add to bring up to full. I not promise this it, but, good place to start. To check for a leak I lay some cardboard under the transmission and just let it idle in park for a minute or two then back the car up and see if there Red Fluid on the cardboard. When you get good at this you can tell from where the cardboard lay if the leak a Front/Rear Seal, Pan Gasket or seal leak around the linkage. Hope this helps.

Don't want to sound negative, but how long has it been since you checked the transmission fluid? You have, one of three transmissions in your car. AOD,AOD-E, or AOT. All are 4 speed with subtle differences. The filter kits will not interchange because the pan gaskets are different. There are several things that could be wrong. First is the fluid level...by far the simplest to remedy. Secondly, the filter could be plugged up and need to be replaced. Thirdly, the pump COULD be showing signs of failure. All this being said, has the transmission ever been replaced that you know of? If so, whoever did it, could have used a "junk yard" transmission; God only knows what shape it's in! It could be that the linkage on the selector is adjusted improperly. This is usually a good sign that someone has transplanted a used tranny. If your tranny is the AOD-E, this is an electronic transmission, and could have some other things going on. The shift solenoids for these are inside the case, so the tranny has to be removed. I do not pretend to know all the answers, but these are just a few of the options I know about. To get a proper diagnosis, take your car to your local FORD dealership, and ask the SERVICE MANAGER who the BEST transmission mechanic is. Have that person take your ride.....for a ride. Good luck

Hate to disagree with the previous answer yet... never enable the oil bypass 9000 miles.... substitute it each and every 3 months or 3000 miles... Ford engines ARE infamous for slugging up and for this reason retaining the oil replaced and clean is serious... think of roughly it regardless of if it fee 50 greenbacks to alter the oil that in basic terms contains 2 hundred greenbacks a year inexpensive coverage for you engine..

Sounds like either a transmission problem, or a broken motor mount... or both. Good luck!
