Are you familiar with knitting techniques? If not (and even if yes), I recommend a book called "Stitch 'n *itch" by Debbie Stoller (there's a series of books but I'm referring to The Knitter's Handbook). It has step by step directions (with photos) on techniques for beginners. There are also anecdotes about how she started knitting. It's funny and informative at the same time. There's also a collection of knitting patterns. Of course, the book isn't free (I got mine for under $10) so if you don't want to pay for it, here are some great websites (all free...and internet access :P).

about.com also has tips on how to knit as well as beginner patterns.
Check out http://knitting.about.com and http://knitting.about.com/od/adultclothingltpatterns1/a/blbeginner.htm for beginner patterns.

One of my favourite sites is knitty.com.
It's not organised quite as I would prefer it (so it might be difficult to find what you're looking for) but the patterns are very original and fun. The "mellow" patterns are best suited for beginners.

This next site has a nice selection. http://www.knitting-and.com/knitting/allpatterns.htm
Take a look at http://www.knitting-and.com/knitting/patterns-clothing.htm for sweaters and ponchos.

If you use Lion Brand Yarn, you know they have patterns too (on the sleeves of the yarn you purchase). Or take a look at their site http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/

More free patterns: http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory.php
For ponchos: http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory/ponchos.php

http://www.knittingonthenet.com/
http://www.knittingonthenet.com/sweaters.htm
http://www.knittingonthenet.com/ponchos.htm

Another one I like: http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory.php
http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory/ponchos.php

Most of these sites have tips and techniques.

Happy knitting. :)

Check out www.lionbrand.com they have a wide variety of patterns for beginners. I would say start out with a scarf or something to start out with. Sweaters probaly aren't the best to start out with. Ponchos are fairly easy if you can find the right one. You will have to register with Lion Brand (but it's free) to gain access to the free patterns. It's definately worth it though, they have a bunch of free patterns. When I started knitting I started out with scarves and blankets. Usually just the same stich with some easy increases or decreases. That way you will have the practice you will need to start knitting more difficult patterns. Good luck and I hope you enjoy knitting!!
