do we cheat children out of knowledge and intelligence by assuming that they can't handle advanced material at a certain age? (i happen to think that children are far more intelligent than they get credit for)

If you are an American than yes. We want our children stupid (sorry is my sarcasm showing). "Brave New World" is an excellent book, and it should be read by children, hook the little buggers on reading as early as possibly. Do not bow to "acceptable"reading levels.

I think 4th grade is much too early for Huxley, the children won't understand the complexitity and subtexts of his work. What are the teachers thinking? I think they should hold it off until high school. I read it a couple of years ago in high school and people had trouble understanding it then...and I'm Canadian!

aldous huxley is a great read, i think you should go on and teach it in the 4th grade. it is true that sometimes "children" are left out of many things because we do not consider them old enough to learn that. i think kids now are much more advanced and intellignt because they have contact with so much many information than past generations. we should start seeing them as persons and not as kids... they deserve that respect from us.

I think kids are very intelligent, but there are certain things that their brains just can't fully understand - it's what makes them kids, they are naive. I think 4th grade is too young for Huxley. Let kids be kids!

You are cheating them out of youth. Let them worry about those things when they are in high school. Let them play now. Too many teachers force reading on kids at an early age. Kids don't get creative by reading books, they get creative by doing things.

A grade schooler with a copy of "Brave New World" in his hands? It is a difficult picture for me to imagine.
