No, there's no chemical. Cats commonly carry toxoplasmosis--a parasite that can be easily passed to humans. An infected cat will have it in their feces. If you have owned cats for several years or more, you probably have already had it (it's really common) and you will be immune to a second infection. A simple blood test will tell you. If you haven't owned a cat for very long, then you may not be immune (you could still have the blood test).
Toxoplasmosis is a very mild disease--you probably never knew that you were sick if you had it--but it can cause problems for an unborn baby. That is the reason you shouldn't handle cat feces. If you're looking for a good reason for someone else to change your cat's litter box, then you have it. If, however, you *want* to be able to change it, then ask for the blood test.

your fiance's right! The cat’s feces could cause toxoplasmosis. Cleaning the litter box and, even better, buying an automatic litter box may prevent the disease. Toxoplasmosis is an infection found in birds and mammals, caused by a parasite.
A pregnant woman might not show any symptoms of toxoplasmosis, but it is very well possible that the fetus becomes infected with the parasite too.
This could result in miscarriage, early delivery, poor growth or stillbirth. A child born with this parasite may get eye problems, convulsions or mental disabilities. However, some infected babies do not develop any disease at all.
Pregnancy and cat litter do not go well together.

You can catch toxoplasmosis from cat feces. It can cause birth defects so it is highly recommended that you avoid the task. If you have lived with the cats for years and always taken care of their box and they are inside cats you probably have already caught it before you were pregnant and are now immune. Unfortunately there isn't a test that I'm aware of to see if you're immune--you would of mistaken the disease for a 3 day flu. So just let somebody else take care of the box until you have the baby and try not to worry too much.

Yes, he is right. You are not supposed to pick up cat feces and you really should wash your hands thoroughly after touching a cat while pregnant - they carry a bacteria that is harmless to grown adults, but can be harmful to an unborn baby. The condition is called Toxoplasmosis. You can look it up on the internet. Good luck and stay away from the litter box!!

There is a risk of toxiplasmosis from cat feces. Therefore, pregnant women are advised to have someone else clean the cat's litterbox. It's not a chemcial but an organism in cat poop.

Yes, never clean up after a cat while being pregnant. Doctors orders! Get someone else to do it, perhaps your spouse/boyfriend. Stay healthy for yourself and your baby.

They recommend tht you stay away from the kitty litter box altogether when you're pregnant, there's micro-organisms or something like that which can make you really sick and possibly hurt the baby
