How do I enter the field of graphic design and illustration?

I have an Associate's Degree in Multimedia Technology, but I do not have any professional experience expect work done for friends and acquaintences.

hey, you have a degree in multimedia technology and you want to go into graphic design/illustration? well, that's really not far off but don't you think you should go into animation 3d or 2d?

anyway, if you have works done for your friends and acquaintances, you can use that for you portfolio to present in your job interview. you can apply to graphic artist jobs and get to show your work. i recommend total honesty about not having done any professional work yet but that you'd get that experience if they hire you because you're a fast learner (if you are) or you're willing to work harder, for them.

another way is do your own designs based on existing ads or illustrations and show them how you improved it or how different your works are to those in the market. in this way you can add more stuff in your portfolio and show more of your talent.

Look for places you think you might want to work and send them some samples of what you do.

If you feel like you want to know more about the field before you seriously start to work, try doing an internship at one of the places you've selected. It can be a good way to see all aspects of how the business works.

You could try finding an advertising agency in the Yellow pages.Have samples of your work that could be shown to them.You might even scan your work and e-mail an example to the agency.Be prepared to sketch something at the agency.
