They're also called inert gases, but despite the name; they still participate in chemical reactions. This chemical series contains helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon. They are just much more stable than other pbjects in the periodic table.

The noble gases are helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon. They're the elements in group 18 on the periodic table and they're called "noble gases" due to their resistance to corrosion and long association with the aristocracy.

Good question, and I looked up more for you here:

The prior answerer has listed the known "noble" gases correctly--I shan't repeat them...

Historically, they were believed to be "aloof" enough to refuse to react with other "common" chemicals (as the prior answerer pointed out, that's a misconception of their time); and since a lot of this was in Europe, the opposite of a commoner was nobility... so the gases were (sigh) called noble.

Life is hilarious, sometimes. Even in chemistry.

Helium, Argon, Neon, Krypton, Xenon and Radon are known as Noble Gases because in simple language, these all gases have their outermost shell completely filled with electrons. (Octet Rule)
Octet means eight.

Noble gases are gases that have their outer electron cloud filled up so that they don't make chemical compunds. (Chemical compunds consist of atoms which have too few electrons in their outer clouds to fill them up alone. By sharing electrons, the atoms get the clouds filled up).

Noble gasses are called noble because they always stay pure, they don't react with other stuff.

Helium, Noen, Chrypton, Xenon.

Noble gases are NOT royal farts as you might have already guessed!
They include: helium, neon, argon and radon
Three of these are used in signlamps*; helium produces purple. neon produce red and argon makes a dark violet. Blues and greens are made by adding other "ingredients" to the mix. They get their name from their preciousness and their association with aristocracy.( See also "Noble Metals" at this link:

*like to see what they look like? Helium is very pretty!
