Here at my lab, some of my colleagues use mice to test medication against migraine. They don't know if the mice actually get migraine but at least brain scans show the patters characteristic for migraine.

In principle, we could test it the following way: allow mice to give them selves a shot of the medication. If they suffer from migraine, we would expect them to learn to medicate themselves when migraine was induced.

But as far as I know, nobody has made such experiments.

We cannot be certain unless we teach animals to speak our own language. My vet said, however, that the spray of a skunk can give a dog a headache, but I don't really know how he knows! Perhaps it's assumed because of the fact that we get headaches due to strong scents that last for an extented period of time. The brain of a dog is relatively close to the composition of our own, except a bit less advanced, and so if we can get headaches, then why can't they?

I don't know. But I would think they could. They get other ailments. It'll be interesting to see the answers you get.

probably...but then again maybe not.

I know how you can find out.
Buy a parrot, train him to talk and then ask him.
