Nixon did it in the 70's when he set one dollar = 100 cents in order to start tracking inflation and the US left the gold standard.
There are few ways to measure the backlash to this cause J Carter put Paul Volker in charge of the Federal Reserve Bank. He is basically the cause of most of the hyper inflation today. He converted things to "this" economy which is still waiting to be explained. This is when OPEC was created to help foreign oil gouge prices like US companies were doing.
I would never do this again because the economy is so far off its axis that it will not work anymore.

A price freeze equals a wage freeze, and a price and wage freeze equals a social mobility freeze. A social mobility freeze equals rebellion against whatever government put the price and wage freeze into action.

It's been done before. Hells, Emperor Diocletian tried it. It doesn't work.

Wage and price controls distort supply and demand they lead to shortages and declines in the quality of goods on the market, while requiring large government bureaucracies for their enforcement. Wage and price controls were tried in the 1960's and 1970's and never worked well.

What prices do you suggest we freeze and what problem are you trying to solve? Inflation is relatively modest and wage inflation is low due to productivity increases.
