no,unit will run but you will most likely overheat the unit and this
can start a fire plus you would just be cycling warm air repeatly
front is cold but back exhausts hot air, so hot air would just be
filling room.
they do make special non vented ac units but they are
as spendy as putting in a new small window to accomadate a
regular unit

The air conditioner will blow cold air but it will also blow hot air out the rear of the unit. With the unit running this way the room will actually get warmer as the cooling coils take the warmth from the air that is passing over them the heat is transferred to the coils in the rear of the unit and the heat generated in the compressor and the fan motor is also emitted from the rear of the unit. That is why these units are designed to hang out of a window leaving only the coils that get cold and the air that is cooled by the coils in the room and all of the generated heat outside of the room.

Running the unit in the room will not harm the air conditioner or pose any kind of danger or potential fire as some "experts" may indicate but will do you little good and the condensate water will run all over the place.

I think the best answer, not very effectively, unless you can block off the whole door with just the back of the unit on the other side. The amount of heat coming out of the back of an A/C unit is greater than the amount of cool coming out the front. Therefore, if the unit just sat in the middle of the room, the room would heat up. You may have a cool breeze on you, but the rest of the room would be worse. There are A/C units that have a hose that goes outside. One of those in a room with the hose going out the door and maybe a sheet hanging down the door would work quite well. I just saw one of these units at Costco.

It will blow cold out the front but it will blow heat out the back of the unit and will also drip water on the floor. Look for a portable unit that has a hose to go to the window.

Yah what the first guy said...

If you are worried about bugs or other things getting in through your open window you can easily seal it up. Usually any place that will sell you a window ac unit will also have the accessories to go along with it.

But please don't operate the thing indoors..that would just be silly.

Not sure why you would want to do this, but room would actually get warmer because of the heat of compression added to the heat rejection of the condenser which is suppossed to be transferred outside.

its possible, if you get the window AC splitted into 2 parts, from a technician. The rear condenser will remain outdoors & front condenser coil/fan will remain indoors.

No, the unit will produce more heat than cooling. It will actually raise the temperature of the room you are trying to cool.

it won't harm the unit but hot air is blown out the back through the condenser. so you would not gain anything.

It's highly doubtful you'd "overheat" the unit.

If the unit is in proper working condition it should work just fine.
