I had a flat but they wouldn't give me new tire, they said I didn't need one, they just patched it and I felt stupid asking.

But a patched tire obviously won't last as long as a new one? How many miles can I expect to get out of a patched tire? What if it blows in the patched spot while I'm driving 60mph on the highway?
I know nothing about cars, can you tell? ;)

Ain't nothing wrong with a patch. The repaired tire will last as long as rest of the tires. I give them credit for not trying to sell you a new tire. Most shops, when they see a woman coming, they play on female ignorance. You would have had every reason to feel stupid if they had sold you a tire you didn't need. Get yer azz down to the book store and get yerself one of those "car car for dummies" or "car care for idiots" or something similar and read it cover to cover 30 times. Next time you have a problem like this you will not be lucky enough to find a mechanic that won't rip you off.

they do just that, they patch it. they take a small rubber patch and sort of glue it to the inside of your tire. They then take a lighter and use the flame to sort of melt the two together to form a seal. They have been doing this for a long time, and it is still safe to use the tire.and you Will never see the tire. It will only work on small holes though. But on some tires, they use what is called a plug, and they don't even have to tear the tire down, they just take some rubber that is in strips and poke one in the hole and the air can't get back out. That is also safe and will work. Plus you are lucky, it is a lot cheaper to patch one than get a new one...

Well, if it's a patch, they take a piece of rubber and glue it inside your tire where the hole was.. It costs much less than replacing the tire. They saved you a chunk of change. There's no reason to feel stupid though. Not like you knew, obviously.

Nothing happens! You save money and they put a chunk of rubber and strong glue and they glue it under extreme heat so it adheres to the rubber.
I had a patched tire that I wore off!

No worries!
Piece of advice: Just to make sure it was well done measure the tire pressure two times , when you go to put gas.

they locate the hole in the tire, make it big enough for a rubber plug, put a strong glue int he hole and jam the plug into it.
