I love the show and have always wondered what purpose they served, also who else thinks Carol Ingles is hottest wife?

Tarsals were used before someone come up with loops to pull boots on & yes she is a hotty(Saw her once in a bikini on The Love Boat --you wouldn't believe it was her.)

the flaps are simply 1800s style and yes Mrs Ingles is quite the lady.

dont recall paying that much attention to the boots... i do know that some boots way back had brush gards on them or like first answer said could be just something to help them put they boots on

They actually had lil mirrors on those flaps for seeing up Mrs. Olson's dress. "she" was a trannie who wore different thongs everyday. Sometimes "her" banana hammock said funny things and the cast would have contests who would not crack up and fudge the lines. they were all a bunch of freaks, actually. Didn't you ever notice Will's slingshot? It was a ball gag.
