Proportion is equal division of something that needs to be equally distributed or divided. Think of a pizza - if the pizza guy sliced the pizza wrong - you don't get equal proportions in each slice of pizza. One slice will be too thin, one too large. To put something is its correct proportion means - to equally divide or distribute a certain thing, following the correct ratio (like if you need one tablespoon of sugar for every liter or jelly, you put two tablespoons of sugar on 2 liters.) Figuratively - it can also mean - each reaction should be proportioned to the cause.
