Hippies during the 1960's were the last true Americans...now we are over run with mindless conservatives trying to fight some religious war while trying to screw everyone to get rich. The hippie movement was the culmination of a social movement that started in the 1890's...they called themselves Bohemians back then and the movement was founded on free thought and challenging social norms in order to progress. Those that don't like change (Christian conservatives) have been trying to fight them every since because the hippies were willing to consider alternate philosophies and even developed some new ones (existentialism). They declared God is dead after reading a little and thinking allot. They read and wrote books other than the bible.

If that is destroying America...then please let the hippies become popular again...because to tell you the truth your version of America has grown ever so tedious, backwards and patently unfair.

Actually there's a lot to be learned from hippies. They had the right idea about disconnecting from society and government, but they had no new paradigm to step into. Instead they thought we should go back to 'nature'. The problem with that is that humans have been out of 'nature' for more than 10,000 years.

Just think what those folks could have done if they had the technology - computers, internet, information and global communication.

The harm I see old hippies doing today is that they have become traditionalist. They became so disillutioned that they flipped 180 degrees in their thinking - there's no inspiration in tradition.

Those that have remained true to inspiration are pushing and more importantly investing in alternative fuels, stem cell research, environment, and technology.

Why do you think hippies are destroying the USA?

Real hippies value many of the same things our founding fathers did: freedom from political oppression, personal liberty, and creativity.

Our country stands on such ideas.

What's destroying the USA are the people with high positions in government and industry who USE this country's resources and people in order to have military and economic dominance of other countries--and to fatten their own wallets.

The use their influence on TV and in print to make many Americans support those already in power. With electronic voting, now they can make elections turn out the way they want--with no paper trail! (It's already happened in at least one presidential election.)

Real hippies don't destroy. They create and enjoy.

The Hippie culture came out of California in the early 1960s.

The hippies were made by the Johnson administration in the early-mid 1960s. They were the unintentional by-product of heavy handed and abusive domestic policy, and the exploitation of American human resources in the war in Vietnam.
The hippies are nearly completely gone now and show no threat to US national security.

(1) How the hippies were made:

Once upon a time, there was World War II. Soldiers came back from World War II after doing a lot of hard and miserable work. Seeing dear friends blown to bits, this sort of thing. They wanted to have the good life once they got home.

Most of them got married, had sex with their wives, and this led to children being born in the late-1940s to early 1950s. Further, these men had by and large been farm boys prior to the war, and they were culturally used to big families, so they had lots of kids. And, further, modern medicine was in full effect, allowing almost all babies born to live to adulthood.

So, there were a *lot* of children, nation-wide, all at once, because so many men had been over seas, and came back all at once. As time went on into the mid-1950s to early 1960s, these men also had steady and (relatively) high-paying (and largely professional) jobs, houses in the suburbs, cars and TVs, commonly, for the first time in human history. They took their kids to Little League, mom baked cookies, etc. This is the environment the first hippies came from.

At some point, these children became teenagers and 20-somethings. What you had was, all of a suddent, a huge wave of teens and young adults in the country, all at once. What to teenagers and young adults do? They rebel, and the goof off, they want to have sex, they want to try new things (drugs included), they try to p*ss off their parents as much as possible (thus the appeal of Communism to them). This is normal. What is not normal is for it to have the numbers to make it a major cultural force.

But those numbers were there, in the mid 1960s to early 1970s.

Now put this together with the fact that the Vietnam war was happening, and the draft was in effect, and the young men of this generation - this generation with such high hopes of progress - had to face the very real prospect of government-ordained life-threatening involuntary servitude (the draft).

You put these things various together, and you get a very motivated, very energetic, very radical movement. (And in the military, you get a heck of a lot of fragging.)

(2) How to stop their destruction of the USA:

What is happening now is that, due to birth control and sexual patterns, most people of the hippies' ideological bent have lower biological reproductive and in-home cultural reproductive rate than conservatives (people who either never rebelled, or who rebelled in the 1960s but grew out of it by the 1980s), and most notably of religious conservatives.

However, people of that ideological bent do tend to have a higher mass cultural reproductive rate than conservatives (Hollywood workers, journalism professionals, k-12 education professionals, and tenured universty faculty are all predominantly leftist).

So, as far as how to stop their destruction of the USA goes, I think it is basically a matter of reducing the centralized cultural power of the education establishment and the media establishment. You do this with homeschooling, school vouchers, choosing your university carefully, being careful about what you use to entertain yourself and your family, being a critical consumer of news, and, possibly, by entering a high-level cultural influence profession yourself.

You've got it all wrong. The hippies were dissatified with war, hatred, and bigotry. They preached peace and love. They loved the land, and started the movement to preserve the environment. Generally speaking, they were the first who got into health foods and alternative medicine. Their movement grew so big, that government had to take notice and make some compromises.

What? Hippy is the name given to the young people with long hair during the 1960s, just as beatnik was the name given to the young people of the 1950s, and flapper was the name given to the young people of the 1920s. Are you so old and do you have such hardening of the thoughteries that you have forgotten what it's like to be young?

Wow......you are way off on this one. I don't think any Hippie would like to see the destruction of the USA. I think they would like to see the US become a more peaceful nation.....I think we all would.
