I agree with Beyond the Western Sea, by Avi. One of my all time favorites. Something Upstairs is also very good.
For mystery at age 11, I would also recommend Wait Until Helen Comes, The Doll in the Garden, and The Gentleman Outlaw and Me -- Eli, all by Mary Downing Hahn.
In the Young Adult Section, you'll like Joan Lowery Nixon, Lois Duncan, and Caroline B. Cooney (especially Prisoner of Time and its sequels).
Some other authors you might enjoy are Jean Ferris, Gary Paulsen, Andrew Clements, and Bruce Colville.

Try Christopher Pike, for your age. Kind of a mix of mystery and some sci-fi horror. But not to much. Also try Ellen Conford and her book title "A Royal Pain". Its a great quick summer read! Also try the Narnia Chronicles. There are so many great authors for kids your age!
Have fun and just try anything with a neat looking cover! Thats usually a good choice. Also, talk to your local public librarian, they usually have a great idea of where to start looking!

I met author Jay Nussbaum at a book signing at Barnes & Noble. He wrote "The Blue Road To Atlantis", a novel about a marlin and his remorah on a journey to save the ocean. However, the novel is much deeper than that, and he draws references from many of Ernest Hemingway, the authors idol. This book is serious, has humorous momeents, and has a powerful ending. I've read the book twice. http://www.blueroadtoatlantis.com/blueroadtoatlantis/index.htm

The ones that wrote Harry Potter, King Fortis the Brave, Eragon and Artemis Fowl. I'm not good at remembering author's names (I know Rowling wrote Potter) but the books are all great and will be perfect for you if you are 11.

J.A.Jance, Janet Evonovich, Stuart Woods, James Doss, Matthew Reilly, James Rollins, Nevada Barr. These are great mystery writers and if you come across words you don't understand, use the dictionary. If you can understand the writing it doesn't matter how old you are you can still enjoy the books.
