you mean button-down collars? of course. the buttons are to keep the tie up under the collar.

As long as it has a collar I don't see why you could'nt. The tie will cover up the buttons, and look just fine. (but of course make sure the tie matches) no stripes with polka dots...... no horizontal with vertical........

do you mean a button down shirt with that straight collar? bolo ties look best with those... if you mean a soft collared shirt like a polo or golf shirt, then no. those are casual shirts and you will look silly.
