Just saw Pirates of the Caribbean and wonder if an octupus the size of the one in the movie could really exist.

Giant squids and giant octopi exist. I don't know much about the giant squid because it was just recently photographed alive by a japanese scientist, but here is what I know about the giant octopus;
They are up to 30ft long and weigh up to 600 punds. Larger individuals live in deeper water. They reach sexual maturity after one year. Males are smaller than females. They are solitary and like to live on the sea bed. They have upto 100,000 eggs laid, and take 6 months to hatch. They eat crabs, mollusks, and occasionally fish. They live up to an average of three years. They are found off the coasts of the nothern Pacific, from California to Alaska and west to the Sea of Japan. It is not indirect danger from humans, but it is vulnerable to pollution like most sea animals. It is highly intelligent.

The largest octopus is the North Pacific giant octopus (Octopus dofleini). It lives in the Northeast and the Northwest Pacific Oceans and weighs about 15kg. Some of the largest ones weigh up to 50kg and measure up to 3-5 meters total length.

Giant squid, once believed to be mythical creatures, are squid of the Architeuthidae family, represented by as many as eight species of the genus Architeuthis. They are deep-ocean dwelling squid that can grow to a tremendous size: recent estimates put the maximum size at 10 meters (34 ft) for males and 13 meters (44 ft) for females from caudal fin to the tip of the two long tentacles (second only to the Colossal Squid at an estimated 14 meters (46 ft), one of the largest living organisms).

There are really some spieces of squids, crabs, lobsters, frogs and octopuses which are very big in size.(AND I MEAN VERY BIG.) There are lots of incidents when fishers do catch big sized squids in their nets. Recently one was caught in India by some fishers in the Bay of Bengal. Another incident which took placed near the islands of Australia, an Aborijini caught a 3 ft long frog (Yes, it looked scary on the newspaper, So wonder how much scary it would be in front of it). In some places near Ice-land and Siberia, local fishers do catch some giant sized crabs. I have a photo in a Russian magazine where a kid is holding a giant one's creepy legs and lifting it up. The crab was perhaps 5 ft or so.
There are acounts of some fishers where they claim seeing a big gigantic ball not so deep in the waters. One sailor reported seeing a big sized ball with a large eye staring at him and then it zipped away.

Giant squid do exist, I think in the channels between British Columbia and Vancouver Island, but I have never heard of giant octopi. Doesn't mean they don't exist, I just haven't heard about them if they do.
