If a word in the dictionary were misspelled, how would we know?

We use dictionaries to establish a common spelling for a word. So, in essence, if it is in the dictionary, it is spelled right. However, there are many different versions of English, and spelling differs among them. When the first American dictionary was published, many words were spelled different than the British versions of the words. That was done on purpose to further develop an American dialect. So, today, the word "color" has different spellings, depending on your nationality. Brits spell it "colour".

I doubt anyone has enough time to skim the dictionary searching for misspelled word and wouldn't assume a dictionary has faults.

I think dictionaries could never be wrong ; it was printed out perfectly. Checked word by word. If any words inside it is misspelled then its a rare chance that it would happen

I don't know that is a very good question it is also confusing cause everyday people use the dictionary to see how words are spelled

Check another dictionary for both the spelling and definition.

If you suspect that then compare it to a different dictionary ---if the same word has a different spelling report your findings to the publisher

well.. there are different companies that make dictionaries, i mean.. not all of them will have a missppled word.
