but when she returned 10 days later, the cat was malnourished and all of her plants were dead and she starting crying in front of me. Should I have offered her a discount?

that was pretty good pay for a simple task.
if you couldn't even do that right, you should have given her back the money she paid you. It could cost her twice that to treat a malnourished animal at the vets office.

The key word is responsibility, and you have shown you have none.

For $10 dollars a day you had a very easy job to do. Heck for 10 days plants only need to be watered every other day. And just how hard can it be to open a can or bag of cat food each day!

You obligated yourself by accepting the money and didn't follow through. If you had, the cat and plants would be fine.

If you are telling the truth then I think you are very irresponsible. How could you do something like that??? You need to pay her $100.00. The plants can be replaced and I find it hard to believe that they would die after three more days after the week you said you would take on the task. You did not feed the cat at all and never once did you water the plants. They would not be in such bad shape had you done what you should have done. I don't blame this woman for crying . Depending how old you are , she should have punished you. or turned you into animal control. for neglect. You smart aleck. You are the one who got the discount.
