Many women can continue to use microlut (progesterone only pill) for decades.

Usually, the reasons they discontinue microlut include:

- intolerable side effects: mood swings, nausea, irritability, bloating, breast pains, headaches ...

- wishing to fall pregnant

- wishing to go on to full oral contraceptive pill or other contraception (eg. IUCD or depot medication)

There is an unclear association between the full pill (combined OCP) and breast cancer, but it is not known whether it is the OCP itself that causes the slight increase in cancer (or is it the better surveillance?)

OCP (and to a lesser extent) the progesterone only pill (POP) are associated with slightly higher risk of thrombosis (deep vein thrombosis - DVT).

It is a safe medication, but be aware of the associations. Discuss this with your doctor if you want more information.
