hey attitude,
Ya its quite difficult to get into iit's.But nothing is impossible.Right?Some of the basic books required for iit entrance r H.C.Verma for physics,TMH for Math and any +2 level for chemistry shud do it.Most of the questions r logical in the entrance test.So think more and solve problems.Cut off marks for getting selected in iit's vary every year.It depends on the difficulty of the paper.
I'm from iit chennai.ya,it's great here.IITM got the maximun placements last year.U'll enjoy the hostel life here.

You are aiming for one of the top notch instituitions in India. The entrance exam conducted by the constorium of IITs is one of the toughest in the world. There are 7 IITs in the country. U have concentrate more on your maths and general science apart from general knowledge and current affairs. The aptitude paper is also included in it. U can ommit biology.
The better advice is to join some top class coaching institutes like the Brilliant Tutorials based in Chennai. They give you top class coaching and the best model question papers at par with the IIT's entrance paper.
Yes, ofcourse it is fun to learn in IITs. They hav the best infrastructure in the country. IITians are respected all over the world. They are not boring. Learning is joy and fun filled in IIT. But you need lot of preparation to pass out the entrance exams. There is two levels of screening tests.

IIT is a cool way of getiing educated!
you must really work hard to get into IIT...
you gotta be extra-intelligent and have an positive attitude!
Do not get depressed by failure... Think it as a Slip and not a Fall!
Keep on trying if you fail to get enterance coz attempts differ on your caste.

you can give IIT afteer 12th class board examination...IIT's are good institute and its common misconception thats IIT's are boring they are good institutes with lot of cultural and sports activities...you should read following books
Physics...University Physics by young and freeman
Concepts of Physics by H.C. Verma
Chemistry
Inorganic by JD Lee
organic...solomon
physical chemistry by atkins
For maths read calculas by marron/hall and knight algebra/thomas and finey and TMH books
