I don't know how China's population had to come to where it's at( so many people that now they need a 1 child policy), probably because it's a very old country right? America doesn't seem to have this problem, but some places are very packed and populated. Will the usa ever get as populated so that we will need a 1 child policy, or do you think a single state will eventually need that? or will it take 100's of years to get to where china is?

funny... I was thinking about this myself the other day... while talking about the illegal immigration issue...anything is possible... if you think about it... how much land/ trees / forest areas already have become homes and apartment complexes....obviously the population continues to expand... on the other hand our political system , economy and industrial situation is different from china, and perhaps our birth control usage is different as well.... we tend to think about how many children we can afford... this may not have been an issue in China's past, and the more children they had the more financial support they may have received from the government and the more help may have had around the home/ farm etc.... ..but like you said China is an older country... and though America is not as old we have far more immigrants ( legal and illegal) that continue to arrive,we use more and more of our land for housing , we use more and more of our environment, fuel, food supply etc... farmers dwindle due to the hard work a low pay.. and because of medical advancements people live longer ..so eventually it's possible we too will find ourselves in this situation... but if so it's still a long way off..

I doubt US will have this policy. US don't have the culture of giving birth to many children to help up in the farms, unlike the past China has. This culture still seeps in China. And apparently, the one of the few ways to control the population is by manipulating the people's respect for law. So there the policy is.

China is not a free country where people can make their own life decisions. The USA basically is. We are free to make life decisions like that and I don't believe we'll ever have such a law. However we do have peer pressure and it is unpopular now to have more than two children, which is enough just to replace the parents and not to add numbers to future population. Many countries that have had high abortion and birth prevention rates now have populations that are out of balance,,,, making too big a proportion of old people who are no longer productive in the economy and labor and not enough young people, and they have advertised to other countries to welcome immigration of young people.

I think because we are a free country they will find a way so that that never happens. People have rights and one of them is to populate the earth. That is in the Bible. The book of Genesis states that.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was passed by the People's Republic of Vermont.

China has become much richer through free market reform, and international trade.

We have a huge empty continent.

Most Americans voluntarily limit the size of their families.

China's population got to where it was because people keep having sex there.

The US will never adopt a one-child policy. It's too restrictive.

No, because the U.S. wants population growth to fuel its economy. The U.S. is barely defeating a population slowdown such as the slowdown occuring in Europe by encouraging immigration.

No, because that would mean that the religious nuts who oppose abortion or contraception will be over-ruled.

So, in the meantime, all of these unwanted babies will be unwanted and abused, and the religious nuts will conveniently find an excuse not to help take care of them.

Actually, evolution is taking care of this problem as we speak. Male sperm counts have been dropping for years now, and so te birth rate will come down too. In fact, it already has.

In some U.S. states (like the one George Bush comes from), they should have a NO CHILD poilcy. It might improve the gene pool.
