Don't do anything harmful to yourself or another person.
Sit down and think about your obsession and what it means to you. Then think about the reasons that you don't want to be obsessed with it--is it harmful? Does it make you/someone else uncomfortable? Is it illegal? Is it just too intense of a level than it should be? Maybe write these reasons down somewhere so you can see them regularly, and make sure you and yourself have a clear understanding of the support for your goal, which is to get rid of the obsession.
Next step is to detach yourself emotionally and physically from the obsession. Try to either slowly get away from the obsession--baby steps--or competely isolate yourself from it as much as you can (both of these depends on what the obsession actually is and how possible that is to do in your daily life). If you can share the information about the obsession with someone else, and you're okay with depending on someone else, you might tell a friend to help you in detaching from the obsession. Everytime you thought about it or showed tendencies of reversion, they could pull you back on track. Otherwise, it's also good to make it a personal committment.
Finding a distraction is good to keep your mind off of it, but don't look for a replacement obsession or anything that could potentially become one. Find an activity. Get involved with something in the community.
Good luck!

Exercise, walk, listen to cheerful music, get a new hobby, take a class, go to places where you will meet new people. Don't spend a lot of time alone - unless it is to study (and you can keep your mind on your studies).
Stay away from people, places and things that will trigger this obsession - do new things! If you need to, write lists of all the things you would like to accomplish in this life (or in this day) - and set goals to get them done. Best of luck - I wish you well.

you must get away from the obsession as much as possible and keep your self busy enough till one day you'll forget about it all together, this works on some obsessions, it really depends on what it is, could you be more specific?

Keep yourself busy and especially try to stay away from everything that has to do with that obsession.
Or try to find a new one, but this time one that can actually be helpfull in some ways.

You need to talk. you need to uncover and understand the reason for your behaviour. Only through understanding it and confronting it can you hope to cure it.
