The first lesson to understand is that the US made Castro the hero he is today. We supported his revolution and takeover of Cuba. What we didn't anticipate is his going commie on us.

In spite of the fact that most of the Cubans in the US are US citizens now, they don't consider this their country. They still believe they will someday go back to Cuba after Castro, and return to their old propery. How naive. Fact is, these fanatical Cubans in the US (both citizens and refugees) drive US policy against Castro.

So our isolationist policy from Cuba has made Castro the South American Hero he is. Now, the US, because of the Miami Cubans influence, cannot see that we missed a perfect opportunity to render Castro irrelevant when Pope John Paul II visited Cuba. Now would be the perfect time to do it.

HOW DO WE RENDER CASTRO IRRELEVANT? All we have to do is drop all sanctions against Cuba and cease to prohibit trade and travel. If we stop making him a martyr, then he will go away, even if he recovers.

We should have done this years ago, but lift the damn embargo! We could benefit in trade with Cuba in a lot more ways than cigars. At this point, Cuba's main export is drugs to the United States, wouldn't you rather have that be something else? Maybe even let Americans in to see what a beautiful country Cuba is? I promise you don't come back a Communist after visiting Cuba.

I think that would be up to the Cubans. Do they want to go back to Cuba or stay here? Their choice. Cuba is still communist. That has not changed. The Cuban population that is here is safe and they are doing okay. Personally I am not willing to spill any American Blood for their cause.

Nothing much can be done if Raul remains in power. If the parliament there decides to go with another person to rule, then that person should be approached by the US to see what reforms they are going to make to make Cuba a more free country for government and trade. Then every effort should be made to convince them to become a democracy and catch up in the world of free governments

I wonder if Cuba would take the expats back, or are they simply spoiled rotten and useless?

Anyone should be impressed with what Castro has done with that small island nation. They take care of their own, consistently produce great doctors, and have eliminated lack of healthcare, hunger and illiteracy.

That's more than we can say for our own society at this point.

I say we should cancel any thoughts of embargo and leave them alone.

What do you mean by this silly question 'what should US do'?. They should mind their own business. Cubans do not want to be turned into another Aruba, or Vegas Bordello, whorehouse, casino vacation playground for fat americans. Leave Cuba alone. They're dong fine, they not have ipods but they neither do they have the crime or drug rates of America.

Why does the U.S. have to do ANYTHING with the Cubans when Fidel dies? It's none of our business! They are an independent country and it's not our job to run in there after he dies to try to "save" that country. We need to "save" ourselves first!
