Ok here's the story. They weren't teenagers, they were real filmmakers who decided to make a very disturbing, quasi-improvisational film. The actors apparently didn't know each other before the shoot. The filmmakers took them to the woods and gave them a brief idea of what the movie was about and then let them loose, leaving them notecard periodically with directions on them, such as, one of you loses the map, or something like that. The best part of it to me is the fact that one of the filmmakers had been in psychological warfare in the army, and he used that knowledge and experience to screw with them in the dark. So a lot of the fear they seem to be exhibiting is real.

No, it isn't real. The directors of the film wanted everyone to think it was real so people would go see it. And now it is the most profitable film ever made.
For every $1 they spent, they made $10,300. Amazing huh?!
The acting was realistic though, because the three filmmakers used improv through the entire shoot.
And they really were tired because they waking up every night to freaky noises and crying babies after hiking for 15 hrs. each day.
And they were hungry because they were given less and less food each day. Sounds bad enough, right? But after all that they also were scared because they weren't told about everything that was going to happen, which makes the acting so realistic.
II think this is an amazing movie and very disturbing. I couldn't sleep for days after I saw it. I just bought it at Target for $5.99 on DVD not even a week ago. It featured an audio commentary with the directers and producers and it tells how, in great detail, they made the movie scene by scene. Oh, and the sequel sukd.

No, the whole story is a complete fabrication by it's Director. The year the movie came out(1999), MTV had it's Movie Awards and all three kids from the film appeared on stage to give the director an award.
Great urban legend though when it first started! I totally believed in it!!

The only thing "real" about this movie were the "REAL" profits the producers made. This film was made for a paltry 60k, and to date, wordwide, it's grossed over 240 MILLION DOLLARS, and anyone who doesn't believe me can go to the given website and check out the stats for themselves.

No, it was all fake. It was just a movie. If it was actually true, I think it would be in pretty bad taste to put it in a movie theater and make money off of it.

Just a movie, not even a good movie, just one that started a lot of buzz and made a ton of money.

No. it was just verisimilitude
Verisimilitude (from Latin verisimilitudo, from verus true + similitudo similitude) is the state or quality of something which exhibits the appearance of truth or reality.
