Scarlett was friends with Ashley while growing up. He went away on a European tour and returned, shining and beautiful just as Scarlett reached puberty. Even though they were complete opposites, Scarlett, in her head, molded Ashley into the "knight in shining armor" and fell in love with that idea. When Ashley announced his betrothal to Melanie, Scarlett felt thwarted. She was the spoiled, self-centered, willful oldest child of a rich plantation owner, remember. She was used to getting whatever she wanted, and she wanted Ashley. Much like many people, she wanted what she couldn't have. She was so blinded by this desire that she threw away the love Rhett wanted to give her.
