Even though I disagree with you on the MJ thing, it's still a good question. Music has gotten stranger, in some forms, all the time. I'd say it jumped the shark at the beginning of rap music.

It hit the ramp when MJ started turning white. It launched over the shark when he lost his normal nose. It landed, and crashed, during the first child molestation case.
