Good question.
The mother usually is the one who takes care and nurtures the children, while the father works to make money.
So the mother continues on, while the ex husband still makes the money to help the children. The husband can't care for the little ones while at work.
Not a bad 'gig' for the mum eh?

Actually, the standard in most states (as far as I know) is that both parents get equal custody. In order for one parent to get more custody than the other (like enough so that that parent can move the kids out of the state, etc.) the court usually has to be convinced that the other parent has problems that will interfere with the kids (does drugs, criminal stuff, abuse, etc.) Hence custody battles. But yes, there IS a presumption that the mother gets custody over the father...less a legal presumption and more of a cultural one, really. This largely comes from traditional views of men and women, the fact that the child came out of the woman's womb, that woman historically have raised children, etc. But, times are changing, at least they are trying to.

My husband's ex-wife took him back to court to get more child support, and ended up getting less!
I don't know where you live, but in Texas the mother doesn't always get custody, and if she does and makes it hard for the father to see the kids (provided he's allowed visitation under a court order), she can be charged with violating a court order. I know several fathers who have custody, and are paid child support by the mother. The problem in many cases is that the former couple are angry at one another, and try to make life as miserable and difficult as possible for the other person, forgetting that the best interests of the child are the most important thing. Try to set anger aside, try to get along with the ex (I know how hard that can be!!), and think of the kids.

The mum is OFTEN granted custody because she not only carried the child but because the bond is often stronger but the mum isn't always granted custody. If a man wants to be in the childs life he should just be a good father and show the child that he loves him/her as much as the mum does. Although saying that, it's a tough call because when all said and done mistakes are made and all that is wanted is the best for the child.

That's not always true, I know divorced men who have custody of their children and the mother gets visitation. Generally if custody is contested, the courts look at what is in the best interests of the children. It all depends on the circumstances and personalities of the parents both before, and after the divorce.

Mum doesn't always get custody, though more likely than not, she will.
It's more likely that Mum will stay home to care for the child, while dads have the tendencies to go out with the boys.
Mum gets child support because she didn't make the child all by herself and she is the one taking care of it physically.
She can make it hard for dad to see kid if he fails to pay support or is considered a risk. As in, kidnapping the kid or abusive.
Legally, if he does what the courts tell him to, she can't make it impossible for him to see kid.

There are equal opportunities. I am a woman who pays child support to a jerk of an ex-husband who made it impossible for me to see my son, and have raised a well-adjusted daughter without the aid of child support. I believe equal opportunity goes both ways. Times have changed - I've been paying child support for 12 years.

because women carry their children inside of them for 9 months.
because usually when things go wrong within a couple a woman can prove that a man is incapable of being a good father.
if you drink or do drugs or your abusive in anyway you're screwed.
