Our own Milky Way Galaxy is 100,000 light years across. There is a triple star system at 4.3 light years away. In this system, is a G2V star - Alpha Centauri A. Alpha Centauri B is an orange K0 star, while Alpha Centauri C (otherwise known as Proxima Centauri) is a small M5 star

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nearest_galaxies
this link gives you a list of galaxies close to ours listed by distance.
the closest one is called the Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy
and is 25,000 light years away from us. what that means is if you travelled at the speed of light, you would take 25000 years to reach Canis.

assuming that you can live forever, if you go on a ever-lasting shuttle and set out for the nearest galaxy, when you come back to earth you might greet humans with 3 eyes, six arms and their back side on their heads.
