Hiccups are the result of some kind of irritation of the phrenic nerve, that nerve supplies your diaphragm. they usually stop on there own.
eating spicy foods, drinking hot or cold beverages are usually the culprits that cause hiccups to happen, but that is not for sure, some say that they are not sure what brings on hiccups.
