Sad that he prefers to not interact with the community. In my past experience dealing with ex-felons, I find the more they interact, the more they show society how much they have changed, the more forgiving society is of them. Also unless you show people who you are, they cannot get to know you and take a chance on you whether it is for employment or a relationship!

He may be uneasy about being out of jail/prison and trying to get his bearings. He could be concerned about the reactions of other people. It doesn't mean he'll stay this way, necessarily.

I wouldn't put any great meaning into it. Are you worried that he's plotting something?

He's done his time. He can live whatever life style he chooses. Interaction is not mandatory. Live and let live.

Sounds reasonable, Society hasn't exactly proven itself his friend. I'd be a bit wary of folks, too.
