It's not normal for a computer to be doing that, but it's been happing a lot with macbooks. because of design, some of the vents are blocked off. you can do a search for more info on it.

Clean the cooling fan inside the casing. It may require a special tool to get in, but once you do, you will see all the gunk built up on it. Try to do this every 4-6 months!

Laptops tend to run hot. One thing you can do to help is get a platform or stand for it. The platform raises the laptop off your desk or table and allows air to circulate underneath, helping to prevent the build-up of heat.
