Study in the morning when you are fresh, then you will not fall asleep and you will memorize more.

Talk when you study and say the dates out loud.

Read something other than your textbook and make a timeline. Textbooks are so incredibly dry and boring - I never use them. If we're studying ancient Egypt, we read lots of books about different aspects of ancient Egypt. We just finished two weeks on Samurai - fascinating! I always use the easiest kids book (between 30 and 60 pages), even for my 12th-grade reading-level son. Too much detail on a subject you're not interested in will bore you to tears (or to sleep!). Read through the history text once, taking notes as you read so you'll know what info to look for at the library.

A timeline will help you see how and when different events took place. It will help you visualize what was going on in the world around a particular time, who lived then, what other events were happening that may or may not have influenced what you're studying.

Try to get inside the head of the historical figure that you are studying. What is motivating him? Why does he do what he's doing? Can't he see where it will lead? It might make it more interesting. Also, looking up the person or story in some source other than your boring history book may give you some more interesting tidbits to add to class discussion.

Karl Marx mentioned: in bourgeois society (i.e. us), the beyond dominates the reward. This implies that, within the brand new international, we almost always use historical past as a variety of "hero worship" or "ancestor worship." History is not such a lot "the tips" or "the beyond" as it's what we make of the beyond. Nobody cared approximately "historical past" till the upward push of country-states and nationalism. Through historical past, the bourgeoisie -- above all by way of obligatory schooling -- needs that each one residents study an "respectable" tale of the country. It is not fundamental for this tale to be correct; it's only fundamental that scholars study to be patriotic. This is why US historical past has consistently omitted many voices from the beyond, considering the fact that there have consistently been many dissenters who had been very imperative of the USA -- ladies, blacks, the indigenous, the operating magnificence, foreigners, or even a few compassionate white men. But the "respectable" tale simplest needs you to study find out how to be proud. The State feeds off of the respectable tale considering the fact that the respectable tale makes it appear just like the State represents the country; whilst in specific reality the State simplest represents the facet of the country represented within the respectable tale. The complete cliche approximately "finding out from our beyond" is bull$h!t. Telling a patriotic "respectable" tale is the distinctive reverse; if you're real patriotic, you're depending on dangerous or erroneous historical past and you're now not finding out any courses. Some individuals research the beyond considering the fact that they wish to set the list instantly and so they wish to incorporate extra voices within the historic narrative. Usually those histories are dubbed "radical" considering the fact that they do not jive with the State-backed variation. So, as you'll be able to see, even as bourgeois society is obsessive about the beyond, it attempts to hide up the truth that its variation of the beyond is consistently prompted via the politics of the reward. So, in case you have a predicament with whatever in these days, you'll be able to research the historical past of that subject and with a bit of luck make clear it, however this have got to be performed out of moral responsibility, now not blind patriotism. Also, historical past does NOT repeat itself. That is one other bourgeois travesty! People make historical past; we don't seem to be simply cogs in a cyclical procedure! Don't get me flawed; there ARE courses to be found out. But the ones courses don't seem to be inherent. In modern day America, many individuals are pronouncing that Obama is like Hitler considering the fact that he's "charismatic" and "socialist" however they forget about that Hitler was once in specific reality a nationalist capitalist. Likewise, they forget about that Marx talked approximately overthrowing the State, and so they quite simply count on that Communism = Stalinism, and hence communism is fascist. Whereas it was once truthfully Stalin's nationalistic vigour take hold of that was once fascist. You see in which that is going . . . we, within the reward, are very selective of what courses we study from the beyond.
