Yes. Too much water will put a strain on a young baby's kidneys. But nobody knows exactly how much is too much. It also fills a baby up so that they won't be hungry for the food they need.

Don't give more than 2 ounces for the first 3-6 months. It will really help the bowels slide if you have contsipation.n

Using plain water from the tap isn't terrible. It's not going to kill anyone. We boiled our water for 2 months and our son was a preemie. He's still fine.

Just be sure to use formula or breastmilk. If you use formula, just heat up the water. You'll be fine.

--edit after reading above post--

Our doctor suggested water. No juice until he's 2, but water is fine.

You're not going to kill your baby if you don't boil the water. You're not going to kill your baby if you give him/her a little bit of water. You're not going to do anything so horrible that you're going to regret it in 6 months.

OMG some of these answers? It's a wonder how any babies survive??? YES, water is harmful to babies. They are born with the perfect balance of water in their bodies, and the rest that they need they get from their breastmilk or formula. You are also not supposed to give babies honey, cow milk, pop, juice, etc. Infants are ONLY supposed to have breastmilk or formula! Also, please check with your Dr. before believeing anything you read on here, obviously some have no clue what they are talking about, and believe it or not, what you feed you infant IS a very big deal, please be careful! Good Luck!

It matters what you mean by the question. If you mean is it bad for making formula, then no, but if you are asking if a bottle filled with only water is ok, then depending on the infants age, no. If your baby is young then it is not recommended to give bottles with only water because it fills the baby up without giving the nutrients or calories.

Paranoia, paranoia, everybody's coming to get me.......

Water is fine. Not really necessary for a normal, healthy infant, though it is recommended in extreme heat. My doctor recommended giving it to my daughter around 6 months because she is breastfed, teething is going to start soon, and she needs the flouride. The dr. ALSO SAID that if she refused the water I could mix in a little bit of apple juice. It's not going to harm your baby. I have heard of infants getting juices sooner for constipation. Oh, and a side note for the paranoid freak: my daughter eats ice cream and yogurt (has since about 5 months) and is fine. You must be one of those neurotic anal retentive parents that I used to hate when I worked at daycare. Chill out.

No,but boil it first if they are newborns and then let it become room temp. I gave my children water as infants and they drink it still to this day. A lot of people have a hard time just drinking plain water nowadays. I think if you train them early it becomes a good habit to have.

No. But most doctors reccomend boiling it for the first 6 months just in case. If you have a normal, healthy, full term infant it should be fine. If you have a premie, it's better to boil it.

No, when I made my daughters formula I used straight tap water and as for drinking I only let my daughter drink straight water when she started getting old enough to eat solid foods and I didnt have anything else on hand.

You should not give water to a baby before 6 months of age - they get enough water from breast milk or formula. It can actually be dangerous to introduce water too early and can cause a baby to receive less nutrients than he/she needs from their milk. My doctor told me to I could mix a few ounces of water with pear juice each day for my 2 month old (helps with constipation).
