Yes, it is very likely. I've done some calculations on this once, an average person knows let's say... 200 people. These 200 ppl know another 200, so thats 200^2 =40000 and so on. So looking at the 6th connection, 200^6 = 64000000000000, thats a lot more than the whole population of Earth...

There's a webpage called iwiw.hu where you can collect your acquintances (similar to Orkut), and I cannot find any user in the system that is further than 3 or 4 connections from me. So I think it is very likely that 6 would work in most cases in real life too.

Consider two infants, born in remote villages. Their only connection is to their parents. If the parents, never go outside the village, then you would have to find some person who has gone to each village and a common person that they know to get 6 degrees. Sounds unlikely to me.

Everybody talks about degrees of separation, but no one ever talks about what constitutes a link.

Do they have to know one another, have worked for the same company, gone to the same college?

Do I have a link to a person if they are married to a cousin but I have never met either one?

What are you considering a link?

Note: In the mathematics world, people calculate a Gauss number-- the degrees of separation from the mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss. In order to establish a link between two people, I believe that you have to have shaken hands. I think my Gauss number is 5 or 6.

It would be great. Probably, most of us are, but not all of us. Imagine a person, living in some forest in a community of 20 people who have never been anywhere else. I doubt that we are connected. However, the world is not that big, especially nowadays, so, everything is possible. All in all, my answer would be 'yes' in vast the majority of cases.

I've seen this many times before.
I'd say 6 / 10 times it'll work, at least in local areas.

Um well, it all does seem to happen in 3's, 6's and 9's...

I think I may get what you're saying, but all I can come up with is:

Sure.

You and your 6n counterparts?

Kevin Bacon certainly is. Try and find an actor that is not linked with him here:
