I live in a brick bungalo in Chicago and all bungalows have 2-3 openings on the basement floor that lead to the sewer. They are covered by a slotted grate, usually cast iron. I'm trying to find out what that grate is called and where I can buy replacement.

If it's slotted, it's the floor drain cover. A sewer access cover will be solid and not slotted. The sewer access cover is called the floor clean out cover. They can also be in the walls. Most everywhere has floor drain covers. They come in cast, bronze, and plastic. There isn't any reason to spend money on the expensive bronze or cast covers unless they are in contact with lots of people walking on them or pushing stuff over them. Good Luck

Call your local plumber for the exact technical term for the sewer grate. Most hardware stores or you local large scale plumbing outlets should carry them. These holes in your basement are for your protection against flooding in your basement. Some people put sump pumps over the holes to pump out the water. If you have these holes it means you have the potential for basement flooding. The former owner might have taken out a broken sump pump where the missing cover is and that is why there is no cover. A sump pump is a good idea to install in your basement as it will give you added protection from water backing up in into your basement. If I were you I would check into a sump pump to put over the hole rather than a grate. If you ever have water back up from the sewer from malfunction or too much rain in the storm sewers, you will be forever grateful for having installed the sump pump. A little expense now can save you a lot of heartache later.

It's just called a "drain cover". You should be able to find a replacement at a plumbing supply house. They may offer a stainless steel replacement, which would be less likely to break.
If it is really unusual, You could have one cast from the original.
