A lot of Hollywood media types were disappointed at how well "Passion of the Christ" did. So thy are trying to knock Gibson down a peg. You're right: the media seem very selective about whose head they call for.
And yes, for the record, Gibson said some awful, inexcusable things, even if he was drunk. But nothing worse than what your average rap singer says on a daily basis!

Misery loves company. Good news doesn't sell. News has become equated with "entertainment," particularly in the US. Mel Gibson is merely the "story of the day." Also, don't forget that most of the most powerful and influential people in the motion picture and entertainment as well as media magnates are Jewish. He'd already pissed them off with his movie, The Passion of Christ.
1) It was not "okay" for R. Kelly to urinate on some girl but R Kelly was already considered some kind of ignorant *** even before this and he is not in the same league as a Mel Gibson or a Kennedy. By comparison, it would be like if my neighbor went to jail for being a pervert. It might make the evening news but it wouldn't garner as much excitement as when some celebrity like George Michael gets arrested for soliciting gay sex in a park restroom.
2) At the time when Ted Kennedy killed his "date" in the auto accident his powerful family was able to buy him out of most of the trouble but it effectively ended any chance he may have had at becoming president one day. For a powerful political family like the Kennedy's this was "harsh" punishment.
3) Justice is not fair - too often it is meted out based on who you are and then it is dramatized and offered up for entertainment by the media based on whether it will boost the ratings of tv news or sell more newspapers.

I think the problem has always been the same, just bigger media now and more coverage. Mel Gibson was wrong, but so were those other ppl. At least he is trying to make amends. That is something Ted Kennedy couldn't do.

Because people like Mel Gibson and the fact that he is anti-semetic gives anti-semitism some credit. Add to that the fact that the US media is largely in the hands of Jewish Americans and Israel can only bomb the hell out of Lebanon if the US lets them... do the math.
Personally, I think Mel was out of order if he wants to make the world a better place he should carry on doing it with his films not running around pissed and not by slurring racial groups.
How would you all feel if he had said Muslims are a bunch of rag head terrorists that would have been ok eh?

Please point out where anyone said it was okay for R Kelly to urinate on a teenage girl or for the Kennedys to drink and drive.
Now, if you're asking why Mel seems to be getting more attention from the media, perhaps it might be because he's more famous than R. Kelly and the entire Kennedy family combined.

Okay, Kennedy got away with it for obvious reasons. Powerful man in a VERY powerful family.
R. Kelly is a joke. I never listen to his stuff and think he's disgusting. Still, what he did is considered a freaky fetish by some/most.
Mel, blew a .12 I believe... That isn't even falling down drunk. That's like 3 beers in an hour! He was not "out of control" drunk, he was "can't stop my mouth from talking" drunk. We don't even have the entire story of what he said because the officer's boss made him cut four pages from the report..
I hate to see anyone fall, but I think he is a disingenuous person and a liar. That makes him bad enough in my book... not to mention a raving anti-Semite just like his old man.

Sad to say it, but it's the American way......
We have troops in Iraq, Israel is destroying Lebanon, Cuba may be getting ready to go through a huge transition, people are starving in Africa, yet the American media is obsessing on Mel Gibson's DUI tirade. How pathetic is that?

Because Of "The passion of the Christ". Hollywood and the left centered media have had it out for him since he produced that movie. personally I don't care what his views are, everybody is in titled to their own oppinion as the last time I checked the first amendment was still valid. By the way his body guard, and publicist are both Jewish. Oh my what a antisemite Mel is.

Because the media loves to crucify people like Mel.
Of course, the fact that the cops let the report out that this had happened should rate as a very good violation of privacy act laws, and should gain the pig department a lawsuit. then Mel could donate it to the Anti-Defamation League and get himself absolved.

Personally,I don't like to see anyone stumble, fall and being laughed at.But you've got to admit for someone who's being idolized by many his actions was just not acceptable. He's a public figure and he is right to accept that fact as human error and his willingness to apologize is a respectable thing to do.
It's a shame and he should know better but okay that's all past now.Not in empty words will he be able to erase that incident in the minds of his fans but through tangible actions.
Let it be a lesson for him to learn then.
